2024 Brings New Canadian Policy Changes for International Students

Canada: A Premier Destination for International Students

Canada’s reputation as a top choice for international students is well-deserved, thanks to its welcoming policies and inclusive environment. These attributes have consistently placed Canada at the forefront of global education preferences.

New Strides in International Education: Canada’s Updated Policies for 2024

The Canadian Government, committed to enhancing its International Student Program and reducing fraudulent practices, has recently introduced new requirements. These changes, crafted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), aim to bolster the safety and well-being of international students.

Enhanced Financial Preparedness: Revised Cost of Living Requirements

In a significant policy update, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Mr Marc Miller, has announced an increase in the financial requirements for study permit applicants. Reflecting the rise in living costs, the minimum financial threshold, previously CAD $10,000, is now set at $20,635, effective from January 1, 2024. This amount, representing 75% of the low-income cut-off (LICO), will be annually adjusted and includes the requirement for students to demonstrate their ability to cover the first year of tuition and travel expenses.

Three Key Policy Updates Affecting International Students

  1. Extended Off-Campus Work Hours: Until April 30, 2024, international students who applied for a study permit by December 7, 2023, can work off-campus for more than 20 hours per week during semesters.
  2. Distance Learning Measure Revised: Time spent in online studies can now contribute towards eligibility for post-graduation work permits, applicable for programs starting before September 1, 2024.
  3. Limitation on Post-Graduation Work Permit Extensions: The temporary policy allowing an additional 18-month work permit will not be extended beyond December 31, 2023.
